The Dead Romantics

by Ashley Poston

Fiction. Themes: Contemporary Romance, Comedy, Paranormal

The main character of this quirky romantic comedy is a cis gender-hetero woman who grew up in a family of funeral directors. Having settled in NYC for a decade, Florence Day returns to her small town home in North Carolina to bury her father.

The book honestly portrays the complexity of grieving families with all its jagged edges and soft corners. Poston's rich dialogue paints a familial portrait of how relationships alter in the wake of shared loss. With a delightfully queer cast of characters, diversity is represented without feeling forced— a real anomaly in the modern romance novel.

While Florence deals with the details and grief of burying a parent, she falls in love with a man who isn’t exactly alive. Like I said earlier, this is a quirkily complicated love story! Oh, did I mention she communicates with spirits?

Check this one out if you want a funny, breezy read that will curl your toes, mist your eyes and prompt a belly laugh or two. Most of all, you’ll think and feel, without realizing how deeply you’ve done both.
